BBQ Dipped Fried Green Tomatoes

Do you have a un-ripened tomatoes left over from the end of the gardening season? Let us help you put them to work in the kitchen with this delicious recipe for a classic southern side dish. These fried green tomatoes taste absolutely divine dipped in sauce made with Miss Essie’s True Honey BBQ.

Directions:

Fried green tomatoes are a side dish usually found in the Southern United States, made from unripe (green) tomatoes coated with cornmeal and fried.

Tomatoes

  1. Slice tomatoes in thick 1/2 inch slices, discarding the ends.

  2. Whisk almond milk and eggs together in a bowl.

  3. Mix bread crumbs, corn meal, salt and pepper in another bowl (for dredging)

  4. Place flour in a bowl (for dredging)

  5. Pour 1/2 inch of canola oil in a large skillet and heat over a medium heat.

  6. Coat the tomatoes with the flour.

  7. Dip the tomatoes in the egg and almond milk mixture.

  8. Dredge the tomatoes in the bread crumb and cornmeal mixture. Coating completely.

  9. Place the tomatoes into the frying pan in small batches. Do not crowd the tomatoes.

  10. Once browned on one side, flip and brown on the other side.

  11. Drain on paper towels, serve hot with BBQ/Mayo dipping sauce.

Dipping Sauce

  1. Whisk Miss Essie’s Honey BBQ Sauce and Mayo until well incorporated.

  • 4 Green Tomatoes (Large)
  • ½ C Almond Milk (or regular milk)
  • 2 Eggs (large)
  • 1 C All Purpose Flour
  • ½ C Bread Crumbs
  • ½ C Corn Meal
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Black Pepper
  • ½ C Miss Essie’s True Honey BBQ Sauce
  • ¼ C Mayonnaise
  • Canola Oil (for frying)
