Grilling the Best Holiday Ham

There are two key things you need to know about grilling the perfect ham for this or any holiday: low and slow.

Low because you do not want that beauty to dry out and slow to maintain those depths of flavors that you will gain from grill cooking. Keep in mind, most hams are already partially cooked to kill bacteria, so in reality, you are just finishing the cooking process, not starting from scratch.

If your grill is equipped with a rotisserie, take advantage of this tool. A rotisserie provides nice even heat as the ham will turn slowly allowing all sides to cook evenly. Rotisserie forks are a nice option if you using a bone-in ham. You can secure the ham nicely and they still allow for browning.

If your grill does not have a rotisserie option, a spiral-sliced ham is the easiest option to place right on the grill grate using indirect heat. That means placing your meat on the coolest part of the grill and turning off a side burner. If you plan on glazing the ham, putting the ham in a disposable aluminum pan will provide a place to capture drippings and keep the ham moist on the bottom. Also, you will enjoy a flavorful, sugary crisp crust which is very delicious.

Cooks Tip - always use a meat thermometer to determine when your meat is done as opposed to going by time. This will ensure you are not eating over-cooked or under-cooked meat.
